How to drive
a manual car.
The clutch is the key skill that separates manual from automatic driving. Here's the four-step process your ACOFEL instructor will teach you:
Mastering this sequence takes practice — usually 3–5 lessons before it becomes muscle memory. After that, gear changes become second nature and you can focus on road awareness.
Push the left pedal all the way to the floor before moving the gear stick. Never rush this — a partial clutch is the most common cause of stalling.
Move the gear stick into position while holding the clutch. For most Australian cars: 1st is top-left, 2nd is below 1st, 3rd is top-middle, 4th is below 3rd, 5th is top-right.
Slowly release the clutch until you feel the car try to move — this is the "bite point" or "friction point." The engine note will change slightly.
Smoothly release the clutch the rest of the way while gradually adding throttle. Moving off from stationary requires a little more gas than changing at speed.

Pass in a manual and you can legally drive any car — manual or automatic. Pass in automatic only and you're restricted to automatics.

How long does it take to learn to drive a manual car?
Most learners take 3–5 lessons to feel comfortable with basic clutch and gear control. Becoming proficient — including smooth hill starts and confident highway driving — typically takes 15–25 professional lessons alongside logbook hours.
Is a manual licence harder to get than automatic?
The test itself is the same — you demonstrate competency on public roads. The additional difficulty in a manual is managing clutch control while also attending to all the same observations and road rules as an automatic test.
Does a manual licence cover automatic cars?
Yes. Passing your test in a manual car gives you an unrestricted licence — you can drive both manual and automatic vehicles. The reverse is not true: an automatic-only licence cannot be used for manual vehicles.
What if I stall during my driving test?
A single stall in a safe situation is unlikely to fail you, provided you restart safely and continue without excessive delay or panic. Multiple stalls, or a stall at a dangerous location (e.g. in traffic), will incur major fault markings. Your ACOFEL instructor will prepare you so stalling on test day is rare.
Can I switch between manual and automatic instructors?
Yes — all ACOFEL bookings are per-lesson. You can try a few manual lessons and switch to automatic, or vice versa, with no penalty.
