How to get licensed
in NSW.

These are the steps Transport for NSW (TfNSW) requires to become an authorised driving instructor in New South Wales. Requirements are subject to change — always confirm current details with Transport for NSW (TfNSW) directly.

    Hold a full driver licence for 3 of the last 4 years

    Complete a TLI41225 Certificate IV in Motor Vehicle Driver Training

  • 3

    Pass a medical exam

  • 4

    Pass an instructor-specific Driver Knowledge Test (DKT)

  • 5

    Pass a practical Driving Test (manual or automatic, depending on vehicle type)

  • 6

    Pass a Working with Children Check (WWCC)

  • 7

    Receive a Letter of Eligibility from TfNSW, then apply for the Driving Instructor Licence

  • 8

    Drive a dual-control vehicle that meets TfNSW standards
